Saggy neck. Turkey neck. My mother’s neck. We’ve heard them all over the years! Call it what you like, there’s one thing that we have in common and that’s that our necks are one of the first places to show signs of ageing (along with our eyes and hands).
Our necks can often ‘give away’ our age or even add on a few years if we’ve forgotten to treat it in the same way we did the skin on our face.
If this is sounding awfully familiar, don’t worry you are not the only one, trust me. And there are things you can do to help your neck.
There are some really basic things we can do to fight the good fight against an ageing neck; when you’re applying your retinol, hydrating serum and SPF (plus any other anti-ageing skincare products you may use), start on your neck and work your way up on to your face when applying-it’s really simple but it’ll stop you from forgetting this area. You could even start from your chest area and work upwards if you like.
Tip: You might want to test patch yourself with products you’ve not used on your neck before if you’ve got reactive or sensitive skin.
You could also try a product specifically designed for the neck area which will have been designed to help your skin overcome the particular challenges skin in that area faces. We particularly like Revision Skincare Nectifirm range and have seen some great results in both our team and our clients.
Additionally, there are treatments that you can have to prevent AND correct (depending on where you’re at). We are often asked: “will profhilo help on my neck sagging”; “can a thread lift be done on the neck”; “can thermage be used on neck?’. The answers are: Yes, yes and yes!
The top neck treatments at Skin to Love skin-tightening clinic are Profhilo, Thermage and PDO threads. These are all non-surgical treatments for your neck.
So, what are these treatments? I’ll give you a little overview of these skin tightening treatments and there’s also lots more information if you click on the names of the treatments above.
Let’s start with…
Profhilo
Is Profhilo worth it?
We get asked questions like this most weeks by our clients (so often that we did an entire blog post on it). And I completely get why; the Profhilo treatment had a huge buzz surrounding it when it launched in the UK-we hadn’t seen anything like it before-it was an entirely NEW and exciting category of injectable treatment.
Generally for those in their 30s upwards, Profhilo is designed to treat skin laxity and poor quality skin on the face, neck and some areas of the body.
Profhilo sits in its own category of injectables as a skin ‘bio remodeller’ as it uses unique hyaluronic acid technology which triggers the production of different types of skin collagen and elastin and gives long-lasting skin hydration.
The results?
An improvement in skin laxity, tone and texture; as well as seeing a luminosity in the skin which has been referred to as ‘turning your skins lights on’.
Thermage
Thermage neck treatments have always been popular at our skin clinic; it’ s a radiofrequency device that we’ve been using here since 2013 to tighten and smooth necks (as well as skin on the face, body and eyes too).
This celebrity favourite works by safely heating up the living part of the skin called the dermis. This warmth stimulates new collagen production deep in your skin and helps to get rid of old collagen.
As Thermage works so deeply it can take a little time to see the results; about 3 months for you to see the tightening and contraction of your skin, but this also means that the results last much longer than superficial skin tightening treatments.
PDO Threads aka The Thread Lift Treatment
PDO threads which are made of complex carbohydrates are placed into the skin on your neck and, depending on the type of thread, they may simply be left to work on their own, not requiring your practitioner to do anything further, for example threads used to strengthen and plump your skin; or the threads may be tightened by your practitioner, if you need your skin to be lifted (hence the name, Thread Lift).
The types of PDO threads that you require will always be discussed during your consultation once your practitioner has a good understanding of what you would like to achieve and what aspects of your neck skin you’d like to improve. No matter what type of thread is used, all will trigger your treated skin to produce brand new collagen in the area. This is great because collagen helps to smooth your skin, give it strength, and give it structure. All types of threads will also trigger your skin to produce hyaluronic acid (HA) which is excellent news for the ageing neck because HA something we rapidly lose from our skin with age; HA helps your skin to remain plump and lubricated, meaning fine lines, crepiness and neck wrinkles aren’t as obvious.
I hope this has given you food for thought about how you apply your skincare products going forward and that you now have a better understanding of some of the non-surgical skin-tightening treatments available to you. As always, please contact the lovely Skin to Love team if you would like specific advice for your skin.
