Imagine you could take all your skin concerns—hyperpigmentation, acne scars, dullness, fine lines—and peel them all away to reveal a new layer of glowy, healthy skin. That’s essentially what Fraxel lasers do.
Fraxel Dual treats only a fraction of your skin tissue at a time, targeting deep within the damaged part of your skin and leaving the tissue around it untouched which cleverly promotes rapid healing. This process allows your body to replace old and damaged cells with healthy ones; creating fresh and radiant skin. The laser technology allows the skin to be treated at varying levels meaning that specific problems can be directly targeted, offering you the very best outcome which can be precisely repeated at each session.
Your practitioner can use the Fraxel laser to either target pigmentation or to target wrinkles and ageing skin, scarring or stretch marks. When targeting most pigmentation, we usually use the 1927nm wavelength which effectively targets sun spots, age spots, uneven pigmentation, ageing skin and other more superficial signs of ageing caused and made worse by UV exposure and the natural ageing process; it is even FDA approved to treat precancerous skin cells called Actinic Keratoses, commonly seen in sun-damaged skin. When we want to treat deeper signs of ageing such as wrinkles and crepey skin, scarring and stretch marks, the 1550nm wavelength is most commonly used. You can use a combination of both wavelengths if you have more than one concern.
The laser is a safe, non-invasive laser skin resurfacing treatment that can give you a smoother, less blemished and more youthful complexion. Unlike some other devices, the Fraxel Dual laser is FDA approved to treat anywhere on the body and face and can treat all skin types safely, without compromising the results. The most common areas where we treat signs of ageing with Fraxel Dual are areas which have had years of, often accidental, sun exposure including the hands, face, neck and chest.
Indications that the Fraxel laser may be right for you:
– You would like to soften the appearance of scarring (that is at least 6 months old), including surgical scars and acne scarring.
– You would like to soften the appearance of stretch marks
– You have sun-damaged skin and would like to improve its health and appearance.
– You would like to improve the appearance of sun/age-induced pigmentation; this does not include melasma.
– You are seeing natural signs of ageing, including lines, wrinkles, and crepey and dull skin.
Will I need to take time off work after having the treatment?
Possibly. We advise that when you have this treatment for the first time, plan it for when you don’t have any social or work commitments the next day or two so that you can better understand how your skin recovers without any pressure or anxiety about your recovery. Many patients will plan to have this treatment on a Friday evening or Saturday morning knowing that they have the weekend free; this normally suits their recovery.
How frequently can I have repeat treatments?
Usually, the minimum time we recommend between treatment sessions is a month. Your practitioner will assess your skin and your needs and make an individual recommendation for you.
Can Fraxel Laser Remove Acne Scars?
Yes. For textured acne scars, in particular (think: icepick, boxcar, and rolling scars), fraxel lasers are more effective than any topical treatment. Designed to target wrinkles, acne scarring and pigmentation, Fraxel destroys damaged skin cells, for a smoother, more even complexion. Fraxel is a laser treatment that uses skin resurfacing laser technology to treat minor to severe skin damage.
Is Fraxel worth it?
The Fraxel laser treatment is an effective treatment for scarring, sun spots, wrinkles and other signs of ageing. The laser targets both the superficial and the deeper layers of the skin giving a smoother, fresher and more youthful appearance. It is a treatment for anywhere on the body. Treated skin will see reduced signs of sun damage and skin pigmentation in just one treatment. This is a skin resurfacing treatment will help your skin heal from direct sun exposure resulting in sun damage. It is a form of skin resurfacing that quickens the skin’s healing process by promoting new collagen production, leaving the surrounding tissue untouched.
Are there any side effects of the Fraxel laser treatment?
Fraxel Dual has a great safety profile and at The Skin to Love Clinic we are able to draw upon a huge wealth of expertise and experience as one of our practitioners is the trainer to other medical practitioners using this laser in the UK and Europe.
What happens at my treatment?
Consultations are an important part of the Fraxel treatment process in allowing you to understand the laser treatment and to establish if the benefits of the treatment are outweighed by any possible side effects. During a consultation, your concerns will be assessed. Your medical practitioner will be able to discuss whether this treatment is appropriate for you, as well as any suitable alternative treatments.
Your practitioner will discuss any possible side effects, questions you may have and any aftercare you should adhere to prior to you having the treatment.
I’m looking for dramatic correction for my signs of ageing, is Fraxel treatment right for me?
We will be able to give you specific advice during your consultation, however, this treatment can help if you have very sun-damaged, crepey skin and/or have other advanced signs of ageing such as deep wrinkles. It is not a substitute for surgical treatments. Fraxel repair treatments leave you with fresh skin flush with new collagen.
Fraxel Dual can be used in combination with other treatments Thermage CPT, Wrinkle Relaxing Injections, Dermal Fillers and the Thread Lift treatment.
You may need more than one treatment to achieve your results. You and your practitioner will create a treatment plan which may include using this treatment alongside other treatments.
Am I too young to have Fraxel Dual?
There is no reason why those in their 30’s onwards shouldn’t consider the Fraxel laser treatment as a preventative treatment and maintain and improve healthy skin. Those who have had a lot of sun exposure may find this treatment especially beneficial.
There may be alternative treatments that may be more suitable for you depending on your concerns and skin condition, such as the Clear + Brilliant laser, which is by the makers of Fraxel Duel and is considered to be the ‘baby Fraxel’ treatment. This can be discussed fully at your consultation.
How do Fraxel Treatments Work?
Fraxel repair treatment uses patented fractional technology to target damaged skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into the skin. The laser treats only a fraction of the tissue at a time leaving the surrounding tissue untouched. This stimulates your body’s own natural healing process, replacing the old and damaged cells with fresh, glowing, healthy skin. The micro-trauma created by the laser stimulates the production of collagen which plumps the skin and helps to reduce imperfections. Depending on the level of the treatment, you may experience redness or swelling after the procedure. This should subside within 1 to 4 days.
